GLASGOW, 29 July 2025 —Abhay Nayak, a 41-year-old Indian national from Luton, has been charged with assault and endangering the safety of an aircraft after causing a mid-air disturbance aboard an easyJet flight from London Luton to Glasgow. Nayak shouted bomb threats and chanted “Allahu Akbar” before being restrained by fellow passengers. The aircraft, which was cruising at 30,000 feet at the time of the incident, made an emergency landing, and he was arrested on arrival.
Dramatic Mid-Air Incident
The incident occurred on 27 July aboard easyJet Flight EZY609, when Nayak emerged from the rear lavatory and began shouting: “I’m going to bomb the plane,” “Death to America,” and “Death to Trump,” while repeatedly chanting “Allahu Akbar”.
At the time of the incident, former U.S. President Donald Trump was visiting his Turnberry golf resort in South Ayrshire, just around 50 miles from Glasgow, drawing heightened attention due to increased security and protests accompanying his stay in Scotland.
As previously reported by The Aviation Brief, the man was subdued by passengers. The crew declared an emergency and the aircraft landed safely at Glasgow Airport around 8:25 a.m., where Police Scotland boarded the aircraft and arrested him.
Charges and Court Proceedings
Authorities have charged Nayak with:
- Endangering the safety of an aircraft, under the UK’s Air Navigation Order
- Assault
He appeared at Paisley Sheriff Court on 29 July, where he made no plea. Nayak was remanded in custody and is expected to appear again within eight days.
At present, no terrorism-related charges have been filed.
Identity and Public Reactions
Nayak’s use of the Islamic phrase “Allahu Akbar” during the incident has drawn attention. While his religious affiliation has not been officially disclosed, his name suggests he is unlikely to be Muslim. Officials have not provided any details regarding his motive or mental health status.
easyJet issued a statement saying “EasyJet’s crew are trained to assess all situations and act quickly and appropriately to ensure that the safety of the flight and other customers is not compromised at any time.”
Police Scotland has confirmed in a statement:
“We believe the incident to be contained and that nobody else was involved.”
Nayak remains in custody until his next court appearance within eight days
