Port Harcourt, Nigeria | July 13, 2025 — An Air Peace aircraft overrun the runway while landing at Port Harcourt International Airport on Sunday morning. All 127 passengers and crew were safely evacuated, with no injuries reported.
Flight P47190, a Boeing 737-524 with registration 5N-BQQ, had departed Lagos earlier that morning and was landing on Runway 03 around 7:45 AM when it ran past the end of the runway and came to a stop in a grassy area beyond the pavement.
“The aircraft overshot Runway 03 upon landing,” said Obiageli Orah, spokesperson for the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).
“Evacuation of the 127 passengers has been completed safely, and we are relieved to report that there were no casualties.”
In its own statement, Air Peace confirmed that the aircraft experienced a “runway excursion” but emphasized that it was a “slight” veering off the runway and that there was no damage and no panic during disembarkation.
“The aircraft veered slightly off the runway without any damage. All passengers disembarked safely and calmly,” said airline spokesperson Osifo-Whiskey Efe.
“We reassure the flying public of our unflinching commitment to maintaining the highest standards of safety in all our operations.”
It is not yet known if a wet runway contributed to the incident. Weather-related runway excursions are a known risk during the rainy season, and the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) is expected to assess environmental factors as part of its investigation.
FAAN has advised that departing flights to Port Harcourt may be delayed while the aircraft is recovered and the runway is inspected.
